Comparison for 1.47 Tsuneyo
First print below is the copy found in Weinbergs book "Kuniyoshi The faithful Samurai" by Hotei publsihing.

B. W. Robinson "Kuniyoshi the warrior prints" lists this as S54:47, numbered, censor Muramatsu - Yoshimura.
Things to look for:
A. - Weinberg's edition is missing the last character of the authors name, (by brush of Ippitsu - an) All other examples include it.
B. - Level of the caratouch against the text differs.
C. - Weinberg's has no blue colouring applied to the face , hands or feet.
D. - The height of the character compared to the text differs in many. Correspondingly, the censor seals adjust height comparatively.

Generally Weinberg's presents the uniform, weapons and sandals in full colour with Tsuneyo and clothing uncoloured. All other examples that I have seen are as below, with the colours applied to blocks and then wiped off prior to printing, giving a gradated fading. Blue has been applied to hands, feet and face.
Conclusion:
To me Weinberg's copy, seems 'cleaner' and probably more realistic as a ghost would be transparent (uncoloured) however a ghosts 'metaphorical clothing' would not be, (remeber Tsuneyo dies before the night of the attack and doesn't actually participate). The printing technique of wiping away the colours applied to the blocks before laying the paper, (as in "bokashi") would require more time I presume than in Weinberg's print, and maybe this was done to make the ghost like appearance more obvious to the masses in later editions? Though generally editions became less complex as they were reprinted and blocks wore out. This is the only print in the series that omitts the last character in the authors name (by brush of Ippitsu - an). Curious, as it is better (what I mean by 'cleaner' above), as it is not subsequently clashing with the censor seals. So assuming that the author text was included in the block with the rest of the text, was the character removed from the block making Weinberg's a later edition, or was care taken in early editions to not colour and press this character, later to be forgotten or over looked as printers became less careful?
